Myriam El Haïk (1973, Rabat, Morocco) is a French-Morrocan artist, composer and performer. She lives and works in Berlin, Paris and Rabat.
Inspired by her double european and arab culture, her language is based upon simple basic signs, patterns or actions, and concentrated on the links she sees between Music and Visual art. Her recent works are focused on a system of visual notation of her minimal and repetitive musical compositions. Thus, her last drawings, performances, videos, installations, sculptures and also her furnitures and games have the same structures as her musical scores, in that they are based on repeated patterns or actions which follow rules and analogies she sets between these different mediums.
If the act of writing and how this one engages, organizes and conditions the body is the red wire of her work, it is also the game and the action to play which are in the middle of her approach. Because Myriam El Haïk likes to play. And it is precisely with the constraint of the rules which she sets that her works are invented. For the artist, the writing is a game, the visual arts and the music, too. A game based on the repetition and the combination, that one finds in her drawings on paper, her wall-drawings, her musical compositions, her installations, her performances and even in her way of putting in scene the various mediums which she explores. The polyrythmic shapes that result are as complex as minimalist and surprisingly coherent.
Myriam El Haïk (1973, Rabat, Maroc) est une artiste franco-marocaine, plasticienne, compositrice et performeuse.
Son langage repose sur la répétition de signes, de motifs et d’actions simples, inspirés par sa double culture, arabe et européenne.
Son travail se concentre sur les liens entre musique et arts visuels et développe des systèmes de notations à partir de pièces musicales -répétitives et minimalistes- que l’artiste compose. Ainsi, ses dessins, ses performances, ses vidéos, ses installations, ses sculptures et même les objets mobiliers ou les jeux qu’elle crée sont autant de transcriptions visuelles de structures musicales.
Si l’acte d’écriture et comment celui-ci engage, organise et conditionne le corps est le fil rouge de son travail, c’est aussi le jeu et l’action de jouer qui sont au coeur de sa démarche. Car Myriam El Haïk aime jouer. Et c’est précisément avec la contrainte des règles qu’elle se fixe que ses oeuvres s’inventent. Pour l’artiste, l’écriture est un jeu, les arts plastiques et la musique, aussi. Un jeu basé sur la répétition et la combinatoire, que l’on retrouve dans l’ensemble de son oeuvre et même dans sa façon de mettre en scène les différents médiums qu’elle explore.
Ainsi, à partir d’un élément simple, Myriam El Haïk parvient à composer des formes polyrythmiques aussi complexes que minimalistes et à construire un langage pluridisciplinaire étonnamment cohérent.
